First of all, I would love to say I live in a stress-free world where all my laundry washes, folds, and irons itself, that chocolate, savories, and chips have zero calories, and most of all, that children never have to deal with any health conditions or suffer in any way. But, in the real world, life isn’t always that easy. I’m 47, divorced, and an unexpected single parent to a nearly 5-year-old little warrior with additional needs. Despite spending a lot of time in hospitals, I feel blessed that he survived and shows me daily how resilient he is. I lost my eldest son unexpectedly at 10 years old and wasn’t ready to lose another without a fight. My youngest was a miracle after a challenging pregnancy, and my experience has given me deep empathy for parents of children with additional needs and those who have suffered loss.

I first encountered Make Them Smile three years ago during a difficult time when I felt completely alone with my young son. The founders of the charity helped us without hesitation, and their support was a lifeline. I researched more about the charity and stayed in touch, becoming a trustee. Since then, I’ve witnessed the incredible work they do, providing essential equipment, therapy dogs, and family holidays to children and families in need, all without government funding. This charity is a true lifeline, constantly working to improve the quality of life for disabled young people and easing financial burdens on their families.

As a bereavement counselor and mental health advocate, I’m passionate about using my experience to help others. Make Them Smile has become like family to my son and me, and I’m proud to be part of such an amazing organization. I hope to continue helping this charity thrive and support as many families as possible, even if it’s just lending an ear for advice. I also hope to make a dent in the ironing pile too!
