Making Christmas Brighter

With thanks to your generous support, our team was out across Yorkshire, Lancashire, and Lincolnshire delivering Christmas presents to children and families who needed them most.

For many, this was more than a gift — it was a moment of joy, relief, and reassurance during a time that can be incredibly difficult for families facing hardship. Seeing smiles, hearing laughter, and knowing that no child was forgotten reminded us exactly why this support matters.

Because of you, Christmas was brighter, warmer, and filled with hope for families across our communities

2025 - A Year of Stories, Strength, and Smiles

When we look back on the past year, what stands out most is not the number of grants awarded or the equipment purchased — it’s the children and families behind every decision we made.

It’s the child who can finally sleep comfortably in their own bed.

The parent who no longer has to choose between paying a bill or buying school shoes.

The family who can attend vital hospital appointments without worrying about how they will get there.

This year, we have walked alongside families through some of their most challenging moments, offering practical support, reassurance, and hope when it was needed most.

For some children, support meant finding their voice. Communication devices, tablets, speech software, and specialist technology have opened doors to learning, connection, and independence — allowing children to express their needs, share their thoughts, and be heard for the first time.

For others, it meant relief from pain or discomfort. Through hydrotherapy, physiotherapy, occupational therapy, and speech therapy, children have been supported to move, strengthen, grow, and gain confidence. We’ve also helped families reach appointments safely by covering hospital travel costs, easing pressure at an already stressful time.

At home, support has been about safety, dignity, and comfort. Beds, mattresses, adapted furniture, bathroom refits, flooring, carpets, and specialist equipment have transformed living spaces into places where children can rest, grow, and feel secure. Everyday household items — from fridges and washing appliances to storage and safety equipment — have helped families regain stability and routine.

We’ve responded where families were facing real financial hardship, helping with clothing, school uniforms, shoes, vouchers, deposits, and rent. Sometimes the support was life-changing; sometimes it was simply what was needed to get through the week — but every bit mattered.

Alongside this, holidays and respite have remained at the very heart of what we do. This year alone, we were able to provide 58 much-needed holidays at Butlins Skegness, giving families precious time together away from medical routines, appointments, and daily pressures.

In addition, we offered respite breaks to 141 families across our two fully adapted respite homes at Haven Golden Sands. For many families, this was the first chance in years to rest, recharge, and simply enjoy time together in a safe and supportive environment.

Behind the scenes, we also took an important step forward by purchasing a dedicated charity vehicle. This has allowed us to safely transport equipment, deliver gifts and essential items, support families travelling to and from our holiday and respite homes, and ensure vital resources reach children as quickly and efficiently as possible.

It has already become an invaluable part of how we support families on a practical, day-to-day basis.

We’ve also focused on joy. Sensory equipment, toys, calming chairs, hobbies, books, sports equipment, and creative outlets have helped children engage with the world in ways that suit them. Our SEN Days brought laughter, inclusion, and precious memories for families who are too often excluded from everyday experiences.

At special times of year, we made sure children felt remembered — with Easter treats, Christmas gifts, and moments of magic that meant more than we could ever put into words.

And for children like Toby, our support has been ongoing — walking alongside them as they pursue their ambitions, build confidence, and work toward futures that once felt out of reach.

Every story in this newsletter is only possible because of the generosity, kindness, and belief of our supporters. You are the reason we can say “yes” when a family reaches out. You are the reason a child sleeps better, communicates more freely, feels safer, and smiles more often.

From all of us at Make Them Smile — thank you for being part of these stories, and for helping us create so many smiles this year.
